“…when you don’t have money and are working self-sufficiently, your problem-solving skills are challenged, your creativity has to work, and you fix the problem creatively. And that can make all the difference between something fresh and different and something processed and stale.”
Robert Rodriguez. Director/Writer/Camera/Editor/Musician
Words to live and die by.
Everything you see here was either Shot, Edited or Directed by myself. Sometimes I do all three and that’s how I like it. Just like Rodriguez. Just like a dozen other filmmakers.
For me it’s important to be multi-disciplined because each role feeds into another and each informs the process. More importantly it’s cost effective and fun.
When I’m shooting I’m already cutting the project. I know how shots work together and because I’m an editor I know what we need and what we don’t.
Editing is like redirecting the footage, assembling it into a new narrative often involving “editing within” the frame. It is said that the final cut is the final rewrite and that is true, so I like to get a head start. It saves a lot of time in the assembly because I know the footage.
Directing is embracing all of that and seeing how the whole project will evolve from page to screen right from the get go.
In my “spare” time I run a blog dedicated to weird, whimsical and occasionally terrifying dark tales. Its where you’ll find a whole bunch of scripts, stories, musings and excerpts from my sketch book. Some of which has gone on to become short films, plays. It’s called the Diary of Short Disturbances.
I’m the co-creator behind the Bristol Setlist a online music program dedicated to showcasing the wonderfully talented and diverse music scene that we have in this fantastic city. All of the shows feature 100% live performances captured along with high quality audio tracks recorded on location and then engineered by by Mark O ‘Sullivan over at Arkam Media (NLL excepted). You can catch up with Mark on Facebook.
Have a poke around my website for samples of my work or get involved via social media or drop me a message below. I’ld love to hear from you.
